He meets the Devil at a crossroads, who refuses his soul on the account of it being “too pure”. However, should Avery manage to provide him with a purer one in lieu, then he would get himself a deal! Therefore, Avery takes little Johnny under his wing, though not exactly out of the goodness of his heart and embarks on an adventure through the South. Eventually, both shall drop the pretences and show their true colours.
