China, 1966. Chongrui Nie comes from a literary family and is targeted by the cultural revolution. He will not be allowed to go to art school as he had always hoped, but instead, he is sent to an arms factory in Guan Cen Shan in Shanxi province. Struck by the beauty of this mountainous region and by the warmth of the local peasants, Chongrui Nie considers the experience a blessing and not a curse. He draws everything, all the time: landscapes, temple statues, scenes of daily life, machines, tools... And since he got there, he was drawn to the mountain twice, at fourteen-year intervals.
